Evaluation of dryness conditions in Babylon governorate Using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI)

Abstract Drought is an anomaly from normal climatic conditions, which affects most of the zones worldwide. monitoring a very crucial step to detect drought vulnerable and raise awareness about future development. The present study aimed investigate efficiency indicators: standardized precipitation index (SPI) Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) spatially description conditions Babylon governorate for period 1980-2016. On basis SPI values, season 1995-1996 was classified as rainy with highest positive value 1.83 among 17 wet seasons represented by values SPI. 2010-2011 negative -2.25 14 dry results NDWI showed that year 2000 deviation average 2016, while 2014 mentioned period. confirmed use plant indices supportive meteorological in detecting intensity severity effect drought. established impact could be extended years after year. That confirms necessity adopting condition moisture sensitive effective indicator assess extent effects. integration satellite rainfall derived has contributed provide representation area.
